Athanasia is Greek and she holds a BSc and MSc degree in Agricultural Biotechnology issued by the Agricultural University of Athens, Athens, Greece. She also holds a MSc degree in Horticultural Genetics and Biotechnology issued by the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania, Chania, Greece.

Research Area: Functional biodiversity in agro-ecosystems

PhD project: Productive activity in olive (Olea europaea) trees; a comparative and integrated approach.

Objectives:
The objective of my research is focusing on the characterization of the mechanisms that induce and regulate the ovaries/fruitlet drop of economically important Italian olive cultivars and also affect fruit growth. My study concentrates on the physiologic, metabolic and molecular basis of these mechanisms. My ultimate goal is to establish a biological model for fruitlet drop in olive trees which will be a contribution to the understanding of fundamental biological processes to the productive activity and also enhance the yield and, possibly, quality parameters with beneficial outcome for the growers and the society.
